The Rio Carnival has African origins, which is evident when one considers the exotic costumes made from bones, feathers, and sequins, and of course, when one thinks of samba, which is now the main component of the Carnival festivities. African slaves brought by the Portuguese developed samba with its intoxicating rhythms, which was adopted by all Brazilians. Many slaves settled around Rio after the abolition of slavery, which explains why Rio is at the heart of samba culture today.
